Maria was born and raised on the island of Gran Canaria, the third-largest island in the Canaries’ archipelago located in the South of Spain.
For Maria, sailing is a long-standing family tradition. She started sailing at a very young age with her dad as a mentor. At the age of nine, she joined the Optimist Racing Team at the Real Club Nautico de Gran Canaria and started competing locally.
From there, everything took off and double-handed skiff sailing became the new challenge. She went on to sail the 29er, clinching top female team at the nationals for two consecutive years before finally jumping into the Olympic 49erFX at only 15 years old. She joined the 49erFX Spanish Pre-Olympic Team for Rio 2016. Amongst her achievements are Bronze at the 49erFX Youth Worlds 2013 (Skipper), a 7th at the 49er FX Junior Worlds 2014 (Skipper) and 5th Female at the 29er Worlds 2015 (Crew).
After coming to Hong Kong to finish her bachelor´s degree, Maria began coaching Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Laser 4.7 and Radial youth sailors, which paved her way to representing Hong Kong for the Youth America’s Cup as part of RHKYC Team Agiplast.
Maria´s passion for sailing and its connection to the ocean and environment, has left a footprint in her life and made her extremely aware of the plastic pollution that is entering into the ocean. Maria believes it is in each of our own hands to make a change, aiming to raise awareness and lead by example in her daily life to turn the tide on plastic.
